Suggestions for keeping current on the state of our democracy and election & voting rights news  . . .

Civil Discourse, by Joyce Vance

The Conversation

We are a nonprofit, independent news organization dedicated to unlocking the knowledge of experts for the public good.

The Conversation arose out of deep-seated concerns for the fading quality of our public discourse and recognition of the vital role that academic experts could play in the public arena.

Information has always been essential to democracy. It’s a societal good, like clean water. But many now find it difficult to put their trust in the media and experts who have spent years researching a topic. Instead, they listen to those who have the loudest voices. Those uninformed views are amplified by social media networks that reward those who spark outrage instead of insight or thoughtful discussion.

The Conversation U.S. seeks to be part of the solution to this problem, to raise up the voices of true experts and to make their knowledge available to everyone.

Letters from an American, Heather Cox Richardson

To understand the present, we have to understand how we got here.

That’s where this newsletter comes in.

I’m a professor of American history. This is a chronicle of today’s political landscape, but because you can’t get a grip on today’s politics without an outline of America’s Constitution, and laws, and the economy, and social customs, this newsletter explores what it means, and what it has meant, to be an American.

TPM: The Franchise

“. . . we’re launching The Franchise, a weekly newsletter devoted to democracy and voting rights in the United States.”

“I think of it as voting rights for people who care about voting rights. We’re not new to this topic. We don’t see it as horse race coverage. Public policy and elections are mere hobbies if the franchise isn’t intact, if people don’t get to vote, if majorities don’t as the ordinary course of things get to govern.”

“With Trump, there are no alms for the addled. He doesn’t spare his friends the kind of humiliation that he visits upon his foes. His favors are contingent not on your past servitude but on your present utility.”
